Norr Malma is situated about 10 km north of Norrtälje by the lovely lake Erken, the largest lake in the region. About 2 km from Norrmalma is the village of Svanberga where you will find a tavern, a pizzeria and a beach. During summer, you can visit the Viking village of Storholmen, situated between Norr Malma and Svanberga. Close by is Norra Malma nature reserve, a unique oak grove with old viking graves.
Norr Malma farm was donated to Uppsala University by Carl Malmén in 1928. He also set up the education fund Malménska studiefonden, from which researchers and postgraduates studying the eco-system of lake Erken can apply for grants ever year until 2050. The Erken laboratory was formally established in 1944. Wilhelm Rode was the initiator, and he later became the first professor of limnology (the study of inland aquatic ecosystems) at Uppsala University. Ever since the 1940s, the field station has served as a combined research base and training facility for researchers and students at Uppsala University.
